My Family

December 20, 2016 By Alysha Sladek

Meet my family. Well, my kids at least 😉 I really wanted to get Christmas cards out this year, and didn’t have a current family photo! It’s kind of like the shoemaker’s kids not having any shoes haha. The last family photo I have is from when my baby was 1!! How horrible is that?! That had to change! With my hubby bouncing around the continent for work I knew it would be challenging to get him and myself in the photos, so, I figured an updated photo of the kids would do.

On the first day that the snow covered the trees and barely the ground, I got my kids all ready and we headed out in the bitter cold to get an updated photo of them. I still can’t believe I was able to get together 5 outfits that morning!! Let me tell you this was NOT an easy task. Normally I spend a few weeks arranging outfits and planning what they’ll wear. Instead I borrowed all the vests and a couple shirts from friends and family (thanks guys!). I am amazed that it came together so fast. I have to remind myself that it’s not about the outfit but about capturing memories. Are their outfits perfect? Definitely not! Does that matter? Most definitely not! What’s important is that I have these images of my kids together happy and smiling, frozen in time as they were at that moment. And when I remember that, that’s all that matters.

I love these little (and not so little) rascals. They bring me so much joy and I couldn’t imagine life without them! Their personalities are so different and wonderful, making each day interesting and fun in new ways. Each one has different talents and strengths that bring something special to our family. Looking at these photos reminds me that they do love each other!  I hope that they can continue to develop their relationships as time goes on!siblings, family photos, large family posing ideas

Stylized Photo Shoot – Take 3

July 22, 2015 By Alysha Sladek

Here’s the last post for our photographers’ stylized photo shoot. It was such a pleasure working with these talented women and I hope to be able to work with them again.

As the night went on we started to lose light fast, but the sky looked incredible. Honestly the sky could not have been more perfect especially since we went from the soft ethereal colors to bold and dramatic. LOVED IT!!

Jody looked stunning in the burgundy and gold gown, and I’m glad Kristy and Liz changed. It was fun to put the 3 of them together. I didn’t want to stop shooting, we were having way too much fun. We shot until it was almost black out and then figured we better call it quits. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to shoot with these wonderful ladies and look forward to trying it again. I have so many more ideas for stylized photo shoots now.

Stylized Photo Shoot – Take 2

July 20, 2015 By Alysha Sladek

Part II of our photographers’ stylized photo shoot. We had grand plans to shoot in the blossoms at Edworthy Park, but all the trees blossomed early this year and we missed our window of opportunity. At the very last minute we decided to check out this awesome spot near Canada Olympic Park. It was beautiful there! Definitely a new place on my list of locations for shooting.

Jamie has the littlest baby bump (expecting baby #4) and we were able to throw in some maternity photos to the mix. I love how beautiful the blue maternity gown looks on her. We made her push her belly out to that she actually looked pregnant. Thanks for being a trooper, Jamie! Laura looked like a ballerina in the outfit Liz made for her. So pretty. Not to float my own boat or anything, but I did Laura’s makeup and I think the colors look great with the outfit. Makeup is one thing I tell all ladies is a must for photos. Even if you don’t wear much or any at all normally, in pictures you want your features to pop and makeup will help that. If you’re not comfortable doing your own makeup find a makeup artist or a friend who’s good at it. Or if you plan ahead of time, Sephora will do a free makeover with a $50 purchase, so get you makeover for your photos and then purchase the makeup to use afterwards. Totally worth it!  And oh how I love fake eyelashes! Seriously, they make such a difference. It’s worth it to buy a pair from Sephora or MAC, but I even use the ones from the dollar store. Worth every penny! Ok, makeup rant over. On to the images of Jamie and Laura!

Stylized Photo Shoot

July 15, 2015 By Alysha Sladek

Liz Cranmer, Jody Ann Crane, Kristy Gardner & Jamie Swainson – I had heard of these wonderful photographers here in Calgary, but didn’t actually meet them until January when we went out for dinner. Laura Taylor had been chatting with the other 4 for awhile and they were all meeting up for dinner and she asked if I wanted to join them? Yes please! I was nervous but excited! And they couldn’t be a sweeter, more fun group. After dinner that night I threw out the idea of getting together for a stylized photo shoot to see how each photographer saw and captured the same subject. They were game! Liz, Jody and I hit up value village and Fabricland to look for clothes and fabric to make outfits for the shoot. Liz was a creating machine and whipped up a few outfits. My mom was awesome and helped me get a few ready as well. We booked the photo shoot for June which felt like forever away, but it’s amazing how fast time flies and the day hit before we knew it. We toyed with the idea of getting models, but I was able to convince them (just barely) that WE should do the modelling. As hard as it is to be on the other side of the camera it is a lot of fun, and I’m so glad we did it!

When the weekend before the shoot came up I was nervous as the forecast said rain for the next 2 weeks. We picked the one day that said no rain, but the skies were not looking good the closer it got to us meeting up. Laura and I left to head to meet the others and the thunder and lightning hit. Then pulling in to our meeting spot the rain started a little and then came down hard! I kept hoping the rain would pass, but it just got worse. So, Laura and I hopped into the car with Kristy, Liz and Jamie (still waiting for Jody who was finishing another shoot) and we danced to Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez to pass time. Nothing like bonding in a car singing along to T-Swift, dancing like no one’s watching. Fun times! To my great relief the rain eventually stopped, the sun came out and it was beautiful!

So what happens when you get 6 photographers together?? Absolute magic! We shot until it was ridiculously dark and then finished the night off with dessert. It was such a fantastic night and I can’t wait to do it again! Thanks ladies! Here are Liz and Kristy. Keep an eye out for the rest to follow 🙂

8 Reasons to go to Hawaii…

February 11, 2015 By Alysha Sladek

I had the privilege of taking my girls to Oahu, Hawaii for a week. I still can’t believe how it all happened. My friend invited a few of us out Friday night, I booked our flights Saturday night and we left Tuesday morning!! It was crazy, spontaneous and one of the funnest things we have done in a long time!! The girls and I had the most amazing time and I’m grateful to have been able to spend time with them in such a beautiful place. I’ve been on a kick about creating memories and this was definitely an amazing week full of wonderful memories!

I’m so proud of my girls for some of the things they did while we were there… They snorkeled and boogie boarded for the first time, jumped off a waterfall and made it through a crazy, muddy hike in the rain, just to name a few. I loved watching them play in the sand and water. They had no fear in the waves – which definitely doesn’t take after me and I’m glad for that. I loved that we were able to make new friends and become better acquainted with old ones.

I thought it would be fun to make a list of some of the reasons why you should go to Hawaii. So, in no particular order here are my girls and my reasons (putting weather aside)…

1) Snorkeling – We hit up a couple places for snorkeling – Waialua (which was where my daughter took these pictures of the turtle! Maybe another photographer in the family?) and Turtle Bay. My girls caught on really quickly and didn’t want to come out of the water.  The girls saw a ton of turtles, sea urchins and fish, their favorite being the turtles. Sharks Cove is another place that I’ve heard is great for snorkeling, but we ran out of time and didn’t make it there.

2) Waimea Falls – You have to pay to go in to the falls, but it was definitely worth it! It’s a really beautiful mile long walk along a paved path that leads you to the stunning 45 foot waterfall. My girls had a blast trying to figure out the spots where movies like The Hunger Games and others were filmed on the walk to the falls. The waterfall is incredible and you most definitely want to take the plunge and swim under the falls. Life jackets are there for your use and are free! Be warned that the water is COLD, but you do get used to it after awhile.

3) The Beaches – The beaches on Oahu are stunning!! Waimanalo was our most favorite beach. The waves varied in height both days we were there, the 2nd day being better for boogie boarding. The water is turquoise, the sand is soft and the surroundings are stunning! We’d stay until the sunset and walk along the beach looking for sea glass. Lanikai is another beautiful beach as well as Waimea, but you couldn’t go in the water at Waimea unless you were an experienced swimmer and had a pair of fins. I am not even close to being a good swimmer, but I enjoyed watching the surfers there. It doesn’t get much better than soaking in the sun while sitting on the beach and watching the waves. I could watch the waves all day long, they are mesmerizing.2015-01-28 18.09.00-12015-02-01_Waimanalo-0102_WEB2015-02-01_Waimanalo-0119_WEB

4) The scenery! I couldn’t get over how beautiful everything is there. The color of the water, the sand, the sunsets, the flowers and trees. I loved every minute being there! The view from Makapu’u with the contrast of bright green against the black lava rock is incredible. The turquoise water with soft sand beaches, like those of Waimanalo and Lanikai, are so inviting. I didn’t want to blink in case I missed something.

5) Pearl Harbor. I have had a huge fascination with World War II for as long as I can remember. I’m not sure why, to be honest, but even back in school if I could find a way to have one of my projects revolve around WWII I would do it. For me to be able to visit the location of such a historic event was amazing and humbling. Due to bad weather the boats were cancelled and we were unable to visit the U.S.S. Arizona memorial which was a disappointment, but even still it was incredible to visit. We visited the museum and watched a short film with actual footage from the attack on Pearl Harbor. My girls enjoyed it as well and we even walked through the U.S.S. Bowfin, one of the submarines that had been restored. 2015-02-01_Pearl_Harbour-0217_WEB 2015-02-01_Pearl_Harbour-0232_WEB

6) The food! I’m all about food. Love it! BUT I’m also really picky. The fresh fruit is unbelievable! No complaints here 🙂 The pineapple is sweet and doesn’t burn your mouth like the stuff here does. It’s like eating juicy candy. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! A local cut down a bunch of bananas for us and once they were ripe the kids devoured them like candy too. The food trucks are so much fun to visit. So many options it’s hard to decide! We tried Hula Dog and it was one of the most interesting hot dogs I’ve ever had – taro (which made it purple) and bacon bun with coconut relish and garlic lemon sauce. Sounds weird but was quite good. The Thai truck was a hit with my girls and I’ve heard great things about Cajun Man and Seven Brothers (again, ran out of time!).  And let’s not forget Matsumoto’s Shave Ice and The Snow Factory shave ice cream. This was a huge debate between my girls over which was better. The shave ice is delicious and beautiful with all it’s bright colors. And the shave ice cream has the most amazing texture. I say, do BOTH!

7) Paddle Boarding – How often do you get to paddle down a river that leads to the ocean? Seriously, amazing! Not only that but it was an absolute blast to do!! My girls were able to paddle themselves or they sat on the board while I paddled. The best part of it for me – you don’t HAVE to get wet ;). We also saw quite a few turtles in the river and the location is beautiful.

8) For the photos! – Hawaii was a photographer’s dream. Maybe it’s because I live in the “Great White North” with sand and beaches (and sometimes the sun) being non existent, but I loved every minute in Hawaii and wish I could’ve taken even MORE photos than I did!

There are so many more reasons I could give for why you should go to Hawaii, and even more that we didn’t have time to do (like the Polynesian Cultural Center, Waikiki, Ko Olina,  many more hikes and so much more). If you ever have the chance to go to Hawaii, don’t hesitate, just DO IT!! My girls and I highly recommend it!
